In addition to being essential human rights, gender equality and women's empowerment are also strong forces for ensuring an equitable economy and sustainable development in all spheres, from inclusive growth to peaceful societies.
On March 11, 2024, the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET), the Securities and Exchange Commission of Thailand (SEC), and UN Women once again hosted the "Ring the Bell for Gender Equality" initiative at the Stock Exchange of Thailand in honor of International Women's Day 2024 and its theme, "Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress."
The major goal of the "bell ringing" is to draw attention to how important it is for the private sector to advance gender equality in order to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in terms of creating a conducive environment within the ecosystems of capital markets.
It gives SET great pleasure to work with partners in Thailand to take part in the 10th Ring the Bell for Gender Equality project as a member of the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE). SET works hard to advance women's roles in business. Working with CG evaluation groups, we developed our own SET ESG Ratings that offered listed firms metrics and suggestions to prioritize gender equality.
For instance, having more female directors on the board will improve women's equality and rights while also improving the effectiveness of the board. Furthermore, SET is dedicated to furthering the "diversity, equity, and inclusion" ideology, which promotes fair treatment for all and propels all industries toward sustainable expansion. To Make the Capital Market 'Work' for Everyone is SET's objective. As we begin our 50th year of capital market development, we pledge to advance equality and foster long-term growth in all sectors. said Pataravasee Suvarnsorn, Managing Director of Thailand Clearing House Co., Ltd., Head of Operation Management Division, and Senior Executive Vice President at SET.
"The SEC is truly honored to co-host the 'Ring the Bell for Gender Equality 2024' initiative that celebrates International Women's Day and resonates the importance of gender equality," stated Dr. Pornanong Budsaratragoon, Secretary-General, SEC, Thailand. Creating an atmosphere that allows listed businesses to incorporate social, environmental, and governance factors into their operations is one of our top goals as a capital market regulator. Particularly, the social component encompasses gender equality and respect for human rights. This strategy approach helps to fulfill the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 5 Gender Equality, and is consistent with the fourth Capital Market Development Plan and the 20-Year National Strategy.
